Our retail industry experts have put together a few tips to help retailers create effective in-store signage that will capture shoppers’ attention and help you boost sales during the holiday season.
- Keep it Simple. When designing in-store signs, it’s important to keep the message simple and clear. Shoppers are often in a hurry during the holiday season and don’t have time to read long, complicated signs. Use large, easy-to-read text and keep the message short and to the point. Stick to the essentials, such as product names, prices, and discounts.
- Proper Placement Matters. Eye level is the correct height to capture attention and draw a shopper to its call to action. Too often we see shelf signage too high or too low and the desired effect – buying that product – isn’t realized. That said, don’t forget all surfaces matter, including the floor. Floor placements can be eye-catching and helpful in leading customers to the exact aisle or corner you want them to shop in. If the maintenance department is telling you that floor signs cannot be used because the adhesive is damaging, they’re wrong – or your printer is using the wrong adhesive. There are very specific kinds of adhesive made for tile, wood, carpet, and more that leave no residue or damage.
- Don’t Forget Color: During the holiday season, red and green are popular colors that will help your signs blend with the festive atmosphere. However, don’t be afraid to use other bright colors to draw attention to specific products or promotions. Signs should not blend in with the rest of the store’s design.
- Vary the Shapes: Use different shapes, sizes, and materials to create a diverse set of signs that will catch shoppers’ eyes from different angles as they walk around the store. Try alternative shapes such as arrows, spheres, or ovals on a combination of hanging signs, floor signs, or aisle markers to guide shoppers through your store.
- Use Sturdy Materials: Holiday signs can stay up a month or two at a time, unlike weekly promotions, so you need to be sure the material is sturdy for the lead up to and through the holidays. Using cheaper materials may seem better for the bottom line, but those signs won’t last the season and you’ll end up having to reprint some or all of them (which means re-shipping fees, etc.).
Last but certainly not least, it’s critical that retailers make sure their print sales representative puts in the work to know what is needed at a particular location. Your printer should actually set foot into the store. Recommendations regarding style, location, etc. will be most effective when they are tailored to the exact layout of your store. Printers should also be up to date on the latest trends in colors, design, and materials.
